In a public elementary school current events class, the teacher was asked whether she agreed with anti-war demonstrators. She answered that once, while driving by a demonstration, she saw a “Honk For Peace” sign and she honked. Parents complained and the teacher was fired. The faculty had been told they were free to teach the controversy of the war but were instructed not to express personal opinions. A teacher’s work is “speech for hire” and must adhere to directives of superiors.
