A Florida public school has a rule that students may wear pierced jewelry only in the ear lobe. A student with a pierced tongue, nose, lip, navel, and chest sued alleging the rule is a violation of her first amendment right of free expression. A federal court ruled against her. Wearing pierced jewelry is no more expressive than long hair, tattoos, or opposite gender clothing. Public school prohibition of each has been upheld.
