North Carolina law requires court witnesses to be sworn with their hand on “the Holy Scriptures.” A Muslim woman was a witness in a domestic violence case. When it came time for her to be sworn, she was handed a bible and told no other holy scripture was available. Later, Muslims from the local Islamic center donated Qurans to the courthouse. Two judges refused the donation announcing an oath on the Quran is not a legal oath under state law. A suit is pending.
