A federal lawsuit was filed challenging federal funding of the Northwest Marriage Institute In Vancouver, Washington. The Institute provides bible-based counseling for "Christian marriages" and promotes "biblical principles for everyday life" for the "65% of... people in Washington (who) are un-churched." Couples learn the ways of marriage according to "God’s word" with a reminder to Christian women that the bible requires them to "win over their husbands with a quiet spirit." The lawsuit alleges the federal government is promoting religion in violation of the first amendment by funding these religious activities.
