Health care guidelines published by the Veterans Administration provide for treatment of "spiritual injuries." Hospital staff perform "spiritual assessments" and, if such an injury is diagnosed, a chaplain is called in on the case. A federal judge decided the guidelines violate the establishment clause of the first amendment in favoring religion over non-religion. The guidelines send a message to veterans that, if they are not religious, they may not recover.
