| A mandatory assembly was held at a Missouri high school to recognize scholastic achievement. Before the program began, a teacher instructed students, faculty and visitors to bow their heads and “pray to our Lord.” He then led a prayer and mentioned Jesus several times. Several children felt coerced into following the teacher’s orders. Their parents filed a federal law suit alleging the school violated the first amendment prohibition on establishment of religion. The case settled when the school district agreed to an injunction prohibiting school-initiated prayer. |
