In Ohio, a Christian rock band obtained permission from their school to perform at an anti-drug assembly. Student attendance was optional, but those not attending were to be confined to the cafeteria under faculty supervision. When parents complained, permission was withdrawn. The students in the band sued alleging a free exercise violation. Their case was dismissed. Government is entitled to exercise control over presentation of its message. The school had a first amendment right to choose another performer to avoid the perception of religious endorsement. School board member Reverend Mark Montgomery - who also happens to be the father of two band members - said the decision would be appealed.
