| One prison inmate in Texas was denied a daily pass to attend church. Prison policy limits religious passes to once a week. Another asked for space to store religious books. Prison policy limits space for all personal property to a 2 foot by 2 foot locker. A judge decided the once-a-week pass rule was a reasonable restriction on free exercise of religion. It furthered the legitimate government interest of prison security. But, because the prison system allows extra space for legal and educational materials, denial of extra space for religious books violates the free exercise clause. |
