| Under a new statute in the state of Washington, anyone who “knowingly transmits or receives gambling information” using the Internet can be prosecuted and sentenced to five years in jail. A spokesman for the state said prosecutors will deal with web sites on a “case by case basis” and will be “more likely” to target big corporations than smaller entrepreneurs. Overly broad statutes and selective enforcement policies violate the first amendment by causing citizens with legitimate messages to censor themselves. |
