The national Christian Legal Society (CLS) requires a signature on a “statement of faith” for membership. A California law school refused to fund the organization because it excludes non-Christians in violation of university nondiscrimination policy. CLS unsuccessfully claimed the law school violated the free exercise clause of the first amendment. The purpose of the nondiscrimination policy is not to prevent CLS from exercising religion. Its purpose is to require organizations receiving school funding to remain neutral toward religion.
