In Oregon, a high school basketball coach made a triangular shape with his fingers and told a player, "This is what you are - a fucking pussy!” He told the team, "I can fuck with your minds and make your lives a living hell." When players complained, he told them he would resign if that is what they wanted. A petition demanding his resignation was presented to school administrators after which some team members refused to play. They were disciplined, sued and lost. Under the first amendment, the petition was protected speech but the disruptive refusal to play was not.
