About Derek
Derek Newman is a first rate First Amendment lawyer. Whether it’s freedom of expression on the Internet, religious freedom in society, freedom to protest in the streets, or personal and political freedom of association in private life, Derek defends the First Amendment with personal and professional passion.
Derek has taken on some highly controversial cases. For example, when a famous newscaster obtained an injunction blocking the broadcast of a video showing her engaged in indecent public acts, Derek successfully won a federal appeal overturning the injunction. He also represented an Internet news site in a lawsuit against the government for the right to webcast the execution of Oklahoma City federal building bomber Timothy McVeigh.
Over the years, Derek has been a guest on most major cable news programs and national radio shows. He’s appeared several times on Fox News Channel’s Hannity & Colmes; MSNBC’s Hardball and The Abrams Report; CNBC’s Geraldo Rivera Live; Court TV's Pros and Cons, Johnnie Cochran Tonight, and Prime Time Justice; Hard Copy; and other national television programs. Quoted in WIRED Magazine and the Wall Street Journal, on NewsWeek.com, and in local news publications throughout the country, Derek provides legal commentary on First Amendment issues for many well known media outlets.
On radio, Derek was the creator and host of the Derek Newman Show, a talk program about First Amendment issues which ran on Seattle talk radio from 2003-2005. Before law school, Derek was a DJ for top 40 and country music, and before that a traffic reporter on several radio stations in San Diego.
Derek graduated from Pepperdine School of Law, where he studied under Kenneth Starr, the renowned constitutional scholar, former Federal Appeals Court Judge for the D.C. Circuit and former Solicitor General of the United States.
